It seems that the US supreme court has ruled that services offering remote digital video recording are legal. This Wall Street Journal article gives more details of their decision.
This is a significant step forward both for consumers and for the planet. Getting rid of internal hard disks will lower power consumption in homes, increase the reliability of set-top boxes and lower their cost, as well as decreasing the volume of waste electronic equipment, amongst other benefits.
